MISSION

The three Artistic Directors of MOTUS O dance theatre believe that the art of dance can and should inspire all sections of society thereby causing them to reflect, examine and appreciate both the diversity of communities and the uniqueness of individuals. The art of dance can help us perceive the world we live in. With that in mind the Directors desire to create original or adapt relevant works of art emphasizing narrative expression and visceral aesthetics that are inspired by our ever evolving inter-personal relationships and our place within contemporary society. These works are created for either young or adult audiences and are always in a contemporary style of dance enhanced with theatrical elements, which may include text and/or characters.

HISTORY

It is strange to think how an American gymnast, an Australian sheep shearer and a Canadian figure skater could have their paths meet and eventually become Co-Artistic Directors of a dance theatre company in Canada.  Yet, as it turns out, that diversity has become the essence of MOTUS O.  Where cultures and talents collide and then reform, creating a dynamic team that explores the dramatic and relishes the physical – and all with a touch of humour.

The Artistic Directors of MOTUS O, James Croker, Cynthia Croker and Jack Langenhuizen, have all been trained in several artistic disciplines with decades of combined performing experience in both street theatre and stage.  This diversity, coupled with their collaborative style of creating, enriches the production values and constantly surprises the viewer.  Each production displays their unique ability to be involved in the whole creative process.  They create the story, design and build costumes and props, choreograph, shoot and edit film and if that is not enough, they perform.

MOTUS O is Latin for “the method of movement”.  In the Artistic Directors words ‘we want to know the meaning of every movement and to move as if it has meaning’.  Physical inventiveness, lightning action, grace and raw energy are all trademarks of their evolving style.

Since 1990, MOTUS O has created 25 full-length productions for both family and adult These productions have been performed across Canada, the U.S.A., England and Australia including such venues as Fleck Theatre (Toronto ON), Playhouse Theatre (Brock University, St. Catharines ON), Markham Theatre (Markham ON), Theatre Centre (Toronto ON), Thunder Bay Community Auditorium (Thunder Bay ON), Lighthouse Festival Theatre (Port Dover ON), Imperial Theatre, Saint John, N.B., The Playhouse Theatre, Fredericton, N.B., The Arts & Culture Centres in Newfoundland, The Norman Rothstein Theatre (Vancouver B.C.), Orlando Fringe Festival (Orlando Florida), Comstock Auditorium (Kalamazoo Michigan), Center for the Arts (University at Buffalo, Buffalo New York), Australian National University Theatre (Canberra Australia), Adelaide Fringe Festival (Adelaide Australia), Settle Victoria Centre (North Yorkshire England), Hambleton Forum (Northallerton England) to name a few.
